Many long-time Batman fans are up in arms about the selection of Ben Affleck for the role of Batman in the upcoming Batman/Superman movie that is slated for release in 2015. Ben Affleck follows in the footsteps of such celebrated stars as George Clooney, Val Kilmer, Christian Bale, Adam West, and Michael Keaton.
Affleck fans say that he is perfect for the role, able to portray the charismatic crime fighter, while possessing the command and sophistication necessary to represent the elite Bruce Wayne. Director Zack Snyder is optimistic about Affleck as the new Batman, saying that he can’t wait to work with him. Surveys show that Batman is America’s most loved Superhero.
The Internet Goes Crazy
The internet buzz started almost immediately Thursday night, following the announcement of Ben Affleck as the new Batman. By Friday, twitter posts about Affleck were overwhelmingly negative. Many fans don’t believe that Affleck will do justice to the role. Some have even taken the hate a step further, petitioning Warner Brothers to oust Affleck and bring in another actor. The most commonly cited factor in the belief that Affleck will not do the role of Batman justice is his last superhero movie, Daredevil. The movie was a resounding failure, and Batman super fans are emotional over the possibility that Affleck will take Batman to that level.
Affleck was not Warner Brothers first choice for the role, Christian Bale was made an offer to return to the role. However, Bale turned the offer down, forcing the studio to get creative. If Affleck does well in the role, it will not be the first time that an actor was put in the role in counter to public opinion and outshone expectations. If Affleck does not pull it off, while it may be a disappointment to Batman fans, it will not be a huge loss for Affleck. With a budding directorial career, Affleck will still be at the heart of our favorite movies long after his days as Batman are over.
