It has been announced that Stephen Colbert will be taking over the esteemed position of hosting the Late Show when David Letterman retires in 2015. CBS has made a deal with Colbert to host the show for five years. The date is not yet set for Colbert’s first appearance on the show, as Letterman has not yet announced the exact date that he will host his last episode of the Late Show.
Response to the News
Colbert is thrilled to have been chosen for the position, and has informed his staff on the Colbert Report that they will all be coming with him to the Late Show. Comedy Central has stated that they will be sad to see Colbert go, but that they are excited that he has been given the opportunity to move on to such a coveted position.
Letterman himself expressed his support of the choice with the statement, “Stephen has always been a real friend to me. I’m very excited for him, and I’m flattered that CBS chose him. I also happen to know they wanted another guy with glasses.”
Fans and critics are expressing mixed emotions about the decision. Since the late night talk show hosts are predominantly white men, many had hoped to see diversity enter the late night picture. However, Colbert was the most popular choice for the show. Many fans of the Late Show are also concerned about the character that Colbert will bring to the show, as he does not “play himself” on the Colbert report, but acts as a satirical conservative while making the point for more liberal views. His real television personality has yet to be shown. Some fans are apprehensive about seeing Colbert host the Late Show, but the general feeling at this point is excitement.
