R.I.P.D. is the new blockbuster from Universal Studios. If you saw a preview and were thinking about going to see the movie, it’d probably be best to do that at your earliest possible convenience. The new film looks set for an early trip to the VHS bargain bin.
Big Price Tag but Small Dividends
R.I.P.D. is a crime thriller starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds. In the film, the two seasoned actors play out a version of the tried-and-true buddy cop movie cliché. In this case, the pair are crime fighters who deal with miscreants from the netherworld who attempt to come back to life on earth and wreak havoc on the lives of living folks. The movie is based on a popular comic book series, yet even this doesn’t seem to have helped the movie’s earnings report very much.
R.I.P.D. cost around $130 million to make, yet it only grossed a measly $12.76 million in its opening weekend at the box office. These numbers hardly bode well for the film’s chances of making any money. Generally, a film’s opening weekend is a strong indicator of its overall moneymaking potential. Plus, in a summer full of blockbusters, any advance press for R.I.P.D. is bound to get washed away and diluted very quickly. If there’s a silver lining though, it’s that R.I.P.D. isn’t alone in its woe; many densely-advertised summer blockbusters are crashing and burning this summer including The Lone Ranger, Pacific Rim and After Earth.
