Original programming on Netflix is finally standing toe-to-toe with the traditional broadcast network juggernauts in the Emmy Award pursuit. Receiving a total of 14 nominations for shows like House of Cards, Arrested Development, and Hemlock Grove, Netflix is still David in the fight between the Goliaths; however, there is noticeable merit given to any Emmy Nominated series, and Netflix-original shows are no exception. Netflix’s 14 Emmy nominations may not hold a candle to HBO’s 108 nominations, or ABC’s and CBS’s 53 nominations each, but at this point Netflix should be content with being allowed in the discussion.

It’s All About Subscriptions

The nominal $8 Netflix subscription fee is revolutionizing the entertainment industry, allowing customers to watch commercial-free TV and movies when, where, and how they want to. As Netflix continues to improve the list of quality programming, future subscribers and Emmy nominators alike have taken notice.

Many customers now forego the higher cost of cable or satellite in favor of the on-demand TV offered by Netflix, which is conveniently available to watch on your PC or Mac, gaming system, Tablet, and smart phone. The smell of the change is in the air. As the market for online TV increases, many predict broadcast TV to go the way of the newspaper and standard mail. Others see a transition similar to radio, where the programming went from a wide-range to now being primarily limited to music. Whatever the change, Netflix will certainly have a major impact, and the Emmy nominations are only the foot in the door.
