New Years Eve is the penultimate party night of the year, and New York City is the place to be for performers and party-goers. This year is no exception, and locals and tourists alike plan on kicking off the New Year with the hottest names in entertainment. The city is expecting over one million people to be celebrating in Times Square this year, with many millions more watching the celebration from the comfort of home.
Ball Drop 2014
The tradition of celebrating the New Year in Times Square began in 1904 with rooftop celebrations, and the iconic dropping of the ball at midnight was introduced in 1907. The ball has taken on a life of its own, as it is reinvented every year, with excited designers introducing new ideas. This year, the ball was designed by Waterford Crystal and features 2,688 crystals. All but one of the crystals was designed by the esteemed company. The last was designed by a 12-year-old patient of St. Jude children’s hospital. She designed a rose that would represent imagination, beauty, and positivity. More than 30,000 LED lights will be used to illuminate the ball, which weighs 11,875 pounds.
New Years Eve Line-Up
This year, the line-up will include some top entertainers in the music industry, including Miley Cyrus, Icona Pop, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the New Year’s bash is expected to be a lot of fun for all involved. Blondie and Melissa Etheridge will also be performing, including some new songs and a cover of John Lennon’s Imagine which will be performed shortly before the ball drops. Those in attendance will also be privy to a sneak peak at the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Happy New Year!!
